The best part about eloping is the pure flexibility of where you host your ceremony. With just the two of you, or a handful of guests, you have essentially free choice of where you tie the knot! If you opt for a symbolic ceremony, you can take you wedding ceremony anywhere, from the tops of mountains to barefoot on sandy beaches. As a destination wedding planner in Portugal, I have been keen to discover new corners of this beautiful country to host private ceremonies. Today I asked the lovely Rita Santana from Rita Santana Photography about her favourite spots in and around Lisbon for elopements. Enjoy!
Palace Gardens in Lisbon
Lisbon is a city of hidden treasures and there are numerous secret palaces with colourful, well kept gardens to explore. I love these magical spots as they feel so intimate and regal whilst being centrally located in the city. My favourite is Estufa Real but there are so many others you’ll love for a secret city elopement. What’s great about these is that you can have your ceremony in the garden and then take photos around the Lisbon bairros for some really unique shots.
Sintra National Park
In Sintra we have so many super pretty and mystic locations, keeping timeless secrets and idyllic landscapes. From the top of the Pena to the dense forests, the Sintral National Park has so many gorgeous corners to host your ceremony. The deep greenery and thousands of trees create special surrounds for a super romantic and personal elopement.
Pousada Castelo de Palmela
As a local girl at heart, a place that is very dear to me is the Pousada Castelo de Palmela. It has so much to offer! The pateos outside have truly breathtaking views across the Arrabida mountain, the Vale dos Barris and Louro mountain range, which incidentally has the most beautiful sunsets you’ll see in all of Portugal! It also has the cloisters which are timeless and romantic in their architecture and create the perfect scene for your Portugal elopement.
Technically Comporta is in The Alentejo, but as it is tucked under the west coast of Lisbon, below the Setúbal province, we’re going to include it here. It is also only an hour journey away from the city. And what a journey worth taking! I could’ve chosen any of Portugal’s stunning beaches but I chose Comporta for it’s tranquility, pristine white sand and dreamy sunsets. If you’ve always dreamt of a beach wedding in Portugal, then an elopement is the way to go, as you can say your promises to each other barefoot on the sand, with the waves crashing at your feet.
Huge thank you to the lovely Rita from Rita Santana Photography for her help with this Lisbon edition of the best places in Portugal to elope!
