Atmosphere

For an exact location you can check out my “Why Portugal” page and my guide to Portuguese regions. To simplify it here, essentially Estremadura is the South Central region above Lisbon but below Coimbra. It includes Leiria, Sintra, Óbidos, Nazaré, Ericeira, Alcobaça (where I grew up) and the gorgeous “silver coast” of the central West side of Portugal. Ribatejo sprawls eastwards and below Lisbon encompassing Setubal and Santarém on the northwest side of the Alentejo.

Estremadura is enchanting. The jewel being Sintra but she will get her own article very soon! Here are old castles, lush forests and vineyards, and traditional Quintas for a truly authentically Portuguese experience. Here you’ll be out in the country with gorgeous countryside and a slower pace of life. It’s serene, quiet and spellbinding. On the coast you have some stunning spots for engagement shoots and elopements in Portugal, like the Berlengas island.

In the Ribatejo region, you have some of the most stunning vineyard land in the country, only second to the Douro valley. You also have the Troia Peninsula that is a tranquil spot of sand near Setubal and Sesimbra that will fill your cup if you love the beach.

Overall Estremadura and Ribatejo is a master of all trades, shrouded in history, simplicity and nature.

Accommodation

Accommodation is a little trickier here than in the major cities and towns. Although there tends to be hotels and B&Bs in the major towns, the choice is much slimmer than in the major cities - naturally. The coastal towns have the most choice as they have roaring tourist trades and surfer cultures that use the local accommodation. B&Bs tend to be much more family affairs than the swish ones you find in Lisbon. As you are in the countryside, there are far fewer AirBnbs here too, so accommodation needs to be thought through properly.

Accessibility

In terms of getting to Estremadura and Ribatejo, the easiest local airport is in Lisbon. From there you can take a national bus from Sete Rios to the town you want to get to or some hotels offer airport transfers for you.

Another option if you are getting married in this region is to stay in Lisbon or Sintra and arrange transport to your wedding location by liaising with your Portugal wedding planner and venue.

Pousada d’Obidos

Want to get married in a Portuguese castle? How about a Portuguese castle with an awe-inspiring view? That’s what Obidos provides. It’s also the most adorable little town embedded in the walls of the Castles with tons of vibrancy, good food and events. Definitely check it out!

Challet Fonte Nova

This adorable Chalet is just a stone’s throw away from the famous Alcobaça monastery and has a really lovely way about it. The house itself is an 18th Century house with accommodation on-site. The outdoor marquee is perfect for your party and meal. It’s a cute little spot to consider for your wedding in Portugal.
