Welcome to a new segment of Nulyweds called Behind The Magic! Your wedding would be nothing without all of the talented professionals carefully crafting your dream day. All that magic comes from years of experience and hours of work, so in this series I’ll be talking to industry professionals all about what they do and what inspires them.
We start the series with the bubbly, creative, floristry extraordinaires Ricky and Amelia from Ricky Paul Flowers.
How did you get into the floristry world?
‘I actually started in interior design which was fun for years but I needed something a bit more creative. I liked that working with flowers is hands on too – not as techy as interior design. I’m not a computer person at all; it’s my one weakness! ‘ – Ricky.
‘I was working in Event planning for a time as Event Manager for The Sloane Club. I loved creating beautiful events but realised that there were no affordable florists in Chelsea. So I took a few courses, started doing arrangements for my events and realised making floral arrangements was my favourite part of my day! It was so clear to me. I then did a degree in flower design and event management – the only of its kind – and now here I am’ – Amelia
How would you describe your style?
‘Our tagline is whimsical weddings and extravagant events so we like to be a bit over-the-top with our arrangements whilst also being wild and funky. More flowers, less foliage for maximum effect. We like to be different and imaginative with our work. We also think it’s important to be flexible and break the mould. It’s really fun to work with brides of all tastes so we can try new things!’
Describe a typical wedding day for you
‘We usually start super early to receive all our high quality flowers straight from Holland. As a team we’ll work together creating the flower arrangements and bouquets that morning so that the flowers are fresh, exactly as we want them, ready for set up in the venues. It’ll take a couple of hours to set up depending on the venue then we deliver the beautiful bouquets to the bride ahead of the ceremony. It’s great to see the bride so excited before the ceremony. After a job well done setting up, we usually celebrate by heading to Pret for pains au raisin, egg and salmon sandwiches and a load of coffee!’
What is your favourite flower and why?
‘Hydrangeas because they are big, beautiful and create a wow factor all on their own! I’m also in love with any flowers that are in season in Autumn. I love the colours and the fact that the are in season for such a short period of time makes them really special’ – Ricky
‘Astrantia because they are delicate, romantic and really soften a bouquet. They also work well with all whole host of flowers’ – Amelia
What essential pieces of advice would you give to brides when choosing their wedding flowers?
‘First decide on the colour scheme and feel you want. Deciding on a general theme will help everything else fall into place. Then choose a florist with a style that you like and be open to ideas. Florists are always creating bespoke pieces for their clients so let them help guide your ideas for your perfect wedding.
One thing we also find works well is when couples let us know what their budget is for flowers upfront rather than asking for certain items and asking for a total. Knowing the limits early on means we can create a bespoke package so you can get the best for your money.
Finally, choose your flowers last! It may sound strange but flowers complement every other element of your day, not the other way around! We take into account the style of your dress, the venue and even the style of your cake in some cases. Once you have a definite look and style for all those things, contact your florist and watch your wedding come together!’
